The Rules of the Table

How to Play

Ultimate Tic Tac Toe is a game of strategy and foresight — nine miniature boards within one Grand Board, where every move you make chooses your opponent’s next. The rules take a minute to learn; the foresight takes a lifetime to master.

The Grand Board — nine Squares, each a game of its own

Rule 01

Nine Squares, nine battles

The Grand Board is nine Squares — and each Square holds its own miniature tic-tac-toe board. To claim a Square of the Grand Board, you must first win the little game inside it.

O plays top-right — the opponent is sent to the top-right Square

Rule 02

The opening move

The first player may open in any Square. But mind which square of the miniature board you play: your position decides where your opponent must go next. Play the top-right square of a miniature board, and they are sent to the Grand Board's top-right Square.

X must answer in the sent Square — and sends O onward

Rule 03

The reply

Your opponent must answer inside the Square they were sent to — they cannot play elsewhere. And their move sends you onward in turn. The board is a conversation: every move both replies and commands.

Three in a row seals the Square with the winner's mark

Rule 04

Winning a Square

Win a miniature board — three of your marks in a row — and that Square of the Grand Board becomes yours, sealed with your mark.

Sent to a full Square? Play anywhere open

Rule 05

The free move

Sometimes a move sends a player to a Square with nowhere left to play. The rule then sets them free: they may play in any open Square they choose. A free move is a powerful gift, so hand it out with care — more often than not, it turns the tide.

Three sealed Squares in a row — the match is won

Rule 06

Three Squares to victory

The Squares themselves form the Grand Board. Just as in ordinary tic-tac-toe, win three Squares in a row — and the match is yours.

Prestige & the Peerage

Play for your Title

In Ranked matches, victory earns Prestige — and Prestige raises your Title, from Novice through Knight, Baron, Viscount, Count, and Marquess to the loftiest ranks of the realm. Your ranked games are kept as an open record, so every Title is worn on merit.

Your move doesn’t just claim a square — it chooses your opponent’s board.
